Getting Started

Window coverings bring immediate privacy and a sense of security. When it comes to making the best selection for your needs, the first questions to ask yourself include:

1. What activities are going to be done in this room?
Keeping these activities in mind will help you determine the answers to the rest of these questions.

2. What are my privacy and light control needs?
You will want to consider how much privacy you desire in each room. For example, you may not need the same amount of privacy for a dining room as you may need for a bedroom. You then want to consider how much light control is needed. Do you want the capacity to filter or completely block out the sunlight? Additionally, if you want the capability to adjust light, privacy and a view, blinds offer amazing versatility.

3. How do my windows open?
You will want to look at the window layout of your home and determine how each window opens and consider how often you will want to access them. This is an important question to ask because you might design a beautiful window covering, but if it doesn’t fit the function, you will be unhappy with the result.

4. Do I need coverings for any specialty or unusually shaped windows?
There are many interesting window shapes and your window treatments may need a bit of special attention. There are arched or palladian windows, bay windows, skylights, A-frames and casement windows, to name a few. You also want to remember any doors that will require coverings, such as sliding glass doors and French doors.

5. Do I have children, pets or elderly persons living with me?
Some types of window coverings can pose a safety threat to small children or pets with their pull cords. There are products that help create a safer environment. Products with cordless operations minimize hazards associated with lift cords. Additionally, safety tassels and wands are available on several aluminum and vertical blinds.

6. Is there a need to control temperature or is energy efficiency a concern?
Window coverings make an enormous difference in the enjoyment of a home. Besides adding to the beauty of the rooms, they can reduce the heating and air conditioning costs. You will want to consider the heat in the summer and cold in the winter, along with the exposure of the room – does it face north, south, east or west?

The two most important things to consider when selecting window coverings are function and design.

The main point to remember is that a well-designed window covering suits not only the window, but also harmonizes with the room. The window treatments should be to scale with the room itself and with its furnishings. Ask yourself:

  • What mood do I want to create? Do I want my room to emit the feeling of casual and comfortable or clean and contemporary?
  • What effect do I want my coverings to have? Will my window add drama and be the room’s focal point or will it serve to blend and coordinate with the room decor and colors.
  • How do I feel about color? Color can add personality, while neutrals with different textures can add just as much pizazz with the added benefit of longevity and flexibility.

Today’s technology offers a variety of special features available for your window coverings including:

Motorized capabilities for shadings, shades and blinds are designed for ease of operation and precise control.

Remote-control operating functions that allow for a single remote transmitter to operate up to 12 treatments. With switch-control motorized units, a three-position switch is used to operate each window treatment.

Window Measuring

Different window covering products require different measurements for an accurate installation.

Windows and the window covering products must be measured precisely for a successful installation. This often seems easier than it actually is. Each window covering product has its own installation method and if they are installed incorrectly they will not operate properly.

If you leave the measuring and installation up to a team of professionals you can be assured of perfect fitting window coverings that function correctly. It’s almost like having installation insurance!

Window Maintenance

Maintenance is dependent upon your product’s style and material. In general keep these tips in mind:

  • Cleaning with liquids: Water, solvents or abrasive cleaners should not be used on wood blinds or shutters.
  • Cleaning with air: The best way to remove dust or debris from hard to reach areas on honeycomb, window shades and shadings is by using a hair dryer on a cool setting or compressed air purchased from an office supply store.
  • Specialized cleaning: Bathtub cleaning or water immersion, ultrasonic cleaning, injection or extraction cleaning and steam cleaning are all specialized professional cleaning treatments. Power washing is not.
  • Anti-static cleaning: Many aluminum and vertical vinyl blinds are specially treated to guard against static electricity and dust. If not, the slats can be wiped with anti-static dryer sheets.
  • Microfiber cleaning: It is best to clean alternative wood blinds and shutters with a soft damp cloth.

Horizontal blinds consist of slats that can be tilted to efficiently control light and provide protection from ultraviolet rays. Horizontal blinds are ideal for windows that are taller than they are wide and are raised and lowered. When the slats are open they can reduce the sun’s glare but not your view. Horizontal blinds can be manufactured to fit almost any size and shape window.  This installation versatility, along with the color, finish and material options, allows these products to be suitable for almost any window in a home.

There are four main types of shades today are honeycomb shades, Roman shades, woven wood shades and the traditional window shades. There are unlimited choices of fabrics, textures and opacity. All offer varying degrees of light control and privacy. With the vast array of fabrics and materials to choose from, there is a window shade to suit almost any room in the home. Let our team of experts help you find the ideal selection for your home.

Interior window shutters have long been a traditional and beautiful addition to any home and are also considered an investment that will add lasting value to a home. The timeless elegance of shutters adds an enduring touch to traditional, contemporary, city or country surroundings. Shutters can control heat, noise and privacy. These products offer excellent light control and provide superior ultraviolet protection. If you are considering shutters, always think about opening the shutter doors and whether or not any obstructions exist. For example, a kitchen faucet can be an obstacle to opening a shutter installed behind a kitchen sink.

The most popular and growing category of window covering options include window shadings and sheers. These products blend all the advantages of draperies, shades and blinds into one design for ultimate versatility and light control. Vertical sheers work particularly well on large window patio doors or on window walls. Shadings and sheers are made with a wide selection of soft fabrics, including opaque and translucent materials.
